Momentum Continues as Teams Address Hospital-wide Themes
Staff Satisfaction=Customer Satisfaction
taff survey response teams have formed to address the results of the 2001 Staff Survey, and plans of action are now being formalized. Involving more staff from more hospital departments, shifts and off-site locations than previously assembled teams, the three hospital-wide "super" teams are looking at broad concepts that came to light as a result of the last two Staff Surveys.
Established several months after the last survey results were presented to the hospital community in March 2002, each team is meeting twice a month to address survey responses. The teams have studied survey data relevant to their team, identified root causes of issues and have begun to brainstorm ways to improve such concerns. By the end of February, each team will be working on implementing improvements to address staff feedback from the survey.
The “super” team leaders are as follows:
Communication:Volunteer and Community Access Services’ Kris Danna and Clinical Services’ Sandy Sloane Leadership: Nursing’s Chris Flanagan and Dietary’s Kathy McManus
Teamwork:Ambulatory’s Angela McLaughlin and PACU’s Cindy Slater In addition to these three broad “super” Action Teams, other teams have been formed to tackle issues and concerns in specific areas of the hospital.
Never Too Early For Spring CleaningThe Spring Cleaning Team, which brings together representation from several departments, including Engineering, Materials Management, Transport, Environmental Services, Nursing and Patient Care Services, and Biomedical Engineering, is examining equipment inventory levels, the equipment repair process and other facility issues in the Connors Center and the inpatient Tower. After key members of the team participated in Spring Cleaning Rounds last July to pinpoint specific issues on the inpatient units, the team has come up with suggestions to facilitate the equipment repair process, to develop more efficient ways of accessing equipment, as well as to improve the processes for managing our equipment inventory.
The Spring Cleaning Team continues to meet as a group to strategize with clinicians in the Connors Center and the Tower pods to come up with solutions to obstacles to optimal job performance and quality patient care.
The team leaders for the Spring Cleaning Team are Patient Care Services’ Leo Buckley, and Hospital Administration’s Martha Pyle Farrell.
Another Focused Team Narrows In on Key IssuesAnother focused team has been created to discuss solutions to specific areas brought to light by the 2001 Staff Survey. The team combines the nurses-in-charge and Materials Management. Similar to the Spring Cleaning Team, this group is taking on the issue of materials and supplies in the Tower. Sponsors of this group are Nursing Administration’s Judy Hayes and Material Management’s Andrew Madden.
Next Step: BWH’s 3rd Staff SurveyAlthough a specific date has not been established, plans are underway for the next Staff Survey.
Employees are encouraged to not only participate in BWH’s Staff Survey, but also communicate issues and concerns to their supervisors on a regular basis. Managers and supervisors are also asked to solicit such feedback during departmental meetings.
Look for more progress notes on Staff Survey Action Teams and the next BWH Staff Survey in future issues of BWH Bulletin.
